Dyeing: Cotton yarns are thoroughly washed to remove dust or any foreign particles and then hung in the open sky to dry naturally. It is then soaked in the hot dye mixture for considerable amount of time and colored yarn is dried.
Weaving : It is similar to handloom weaving of clothes traditionally and incorporates three important steps, namely - warping, winding and design weaving.
Warangal Durries is an exclusive GI of Telangana: The weaving of Warangal Durries is a century-old craft . It is unique to the Kothawada region of Telangana. The rugs are used for various purposes such as offering namaaz, asana for sitting, sleeping, wall hanging, doormats etc. Warangal Durries are made of cotton yarns, jute yarns, or a blend of both. These durries or rugs or mats or carpets are exclusively woven using interlocked weft technique. The durries are woven on traditional pit looms by the skilled weavers of Telangana.
Warangal has long been an important durry-weaving centre with a strong local flavour. The tradition of making Durries in Warangal dates back to the Mughal era, when the Mughal army came down to south in Deccan region of India, an army comprising of artists and craftsmen started making carpets and sooner the local people had accepted it as their part of regular income, passed down from one generation to the next for more than hundred years. It is highly labour intensive rural based cottage industry.
